Lawrence was a member of the International Union of Bricklayers and Allied Craftworkers. He established a baseball team at Cranston and a 15 year old travel baseball team he was an assistant coach for the American Legion Baseball Team and a pitching coach and he had also worked with the youth group at church.

Lawrence started playing little league baseball at an early age, when he had to walk to town to play and then walk back home after the game. He was a 1971 graduate of Morehead State University receiving his BS degree and where he was a pitcher on the baseball team under Coach Sonny Allen. Lawrence was a retired bricklayer and a member of the Midland First Church of God. He was born on Main Mingo County, West Virginia, a son of the late Virgil Franklin Dowdy and Minnie Kiser Dowdy. Lawrence Rabin Dowdy, 79, of Morehead, Kentucky, passed away Thursday, Maat Elliott Nursing and Rehabilitation in Sandy Hook, Kentucky.
